Sky Is the Limit

About this movie

In Sky is the Limit, Oyiri explores how information and spectacle have become inseparably intertwined, by using the Hindenburg disaster (1937) and the September 11 attacks (2001) as case studies. For the artist Christelle Oyiri, these aviation catastrophes symbolise an era of emotionally charged imagery, where the boundaries between reality and media staging begin to blur. The multi-layered installation Sky is the Limit was conceived specifically for the exhibition "Image and Power", which was held at Zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The artwork/short film questions how media symbols shape our historical narratives and self-perception-revealing hidden fantasies of power, hubris, and imperial ambition. The artwork/ short film is about a young boy, played by himself Tyrae Lammy, who can't wait to go on holiday and reach the sky on an airplane for the first time ever with his mother. After talking to his teddy in bed as children do, he finally falls asleep and he has a vivid dream about the catastrophes of what have happened when humans have tried to reach the sky in the past, such as the Hindenburg disaster and the Twin Towers disaster (9/11). In his dream, he has became a news reporter on the streets of London city and begins questioning members of the public about their opinions on certain topics linked to the sky, i.e. planes and birds. After a series of questions are asked and responses from the public, he then awakes from his dream to go on holiday excitedly with his mother .
