Since the Russian missile attack on Mukachevo, no one can believe that Transcarpathia remains a safe part of Ukraine. Yet life has never been easy in this region. Men are either fighting on the frontlines or fleeing to the EU to avoid conscription, leaving behind old, family-less elders, abandoned women, and children trapped in hospitals, all waiting for the war to end. One Mile from Peace is a powerful documentary that delves into the plight of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia through the lens of Reverend József Sipos. The film follows a day in his life-an inspiring blend of spiritual guidance and urgent social work. Amidst the shadow of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he offers comfort with kind words, food, and aid to those left behind: lonely women, despairing seniors, abandoned children. As we journey with Reverend Sipos, we see the lives of border villagers - marked by abandonment, fear, and a flicker of hope for an end to the suffering. The film features the stories of the region's oldest resident, 92-year-old Aunt Anna, and Béci, whose son and two grandsons have emigrated abroad. We also meet children forgotten in Mukachevo hospital, their stories woven together by Sipos himself, leader of the KEGYES Foundation (Help for Forgotten Children in Transcarpathia). A poignant, heartfelt portrayal of resilience and the enduring hope that one day, the darkness of war will give way to peace.
