A small fragment of an asteroid falls into Aurora's backyard just before she leaves for school. This event causes Aurora to believe that her father is trying to make contact, but he is missing and has probably been buried in the mud of a mining dam. Driven by the desire to reconnect with her father, Aurora goes to a second-hand store and trades her small gold necklace for a spyglass. When her mother discovers this exchange, she becomes very disappointed with her. In the light of the next morning, mother and daughter are awakened by a loud crash: a huge asteroid has crashed in front of Aurora's house.
