In 1935 Cuba, María Teresa Vera, a gifted female troubadour with a complicated past, sends for Lorenzo Hierrezuelo, a skilled singer and guitarist of the Justo García Quartet. At her home, María shares the story of her journey, sparking flashbacks of her bohemian days performing with a male orchestra and her spiritual awakening through Yoruba traditions, which compelled her to abandon her life as a Trova musician. With mounting eviction notices and financial hardship, María is forced to return to the stage to support herself, her ill sister, and her eight nieces and nephews. Determined to succeed, she recruits Lorenzo to help her reignite her musical career for one more performance. In the vibrant ambiance of a Cuban nightclub, María unveils "Veinte Años," a heartfelt song penned by her childhood friend Guillermina Aramburu. With Lorenzo's support, their performance mesmerizes the audience. In this moment of catharsis, María reconciles her artistic identity with her spiritual journey. As the applause fills the room, María embraces her resilience and the profound love she holds for music, realizing that her struggles have shaped her into a stronger artist and woman. Through music and camaraderie, she finds the strength to honor her roots and move forward.
