The action takes place in November 1920. White Guard officer Sergey Neratov arrives from Crimea to Constantinople along with the remnants of Wrangel's defeated army and civilian refugees. Lonely and broken, having lost absolutely everything during the revolution and the Civil War - the army was destroyed, his wife and children died - Neratov becomes the head of the Russian emigration.
