The TV series is set between 1938 and 1944, during Japan's invasion of China, a time when the country was fractured. Under the leadership and influence of the Communist Party of China, a group of patriotic and progressive cultural figures-including Guo Moruo, Xia Yan, Tian Han, Ba Jin, Liu Yazi, Tao Xingzhi, Xu Beihong, Mao Dun, and Ouyang Yuqian-gathered in Guilin. Together with the Guilin "Eighth Office" led by Li Kenong, they transformed the scenic landscape into a battlefield of ideas. Using pens as weapons and stages as arenas, they carried out a cultural resistance against the invaders. Through news, literature, theater, music, and art, they promoted the Anti-Japanese National United Front, turning themes of exile and revival, adversity and responsibility, survival and death, as well as personal emotions and national sentiments, into a cultural Great Wall against foreign aggression. This is the story of a "cultural war" without gunfire, where creativity became a tool of resistance.
